mountains + moonshine

Took a trip to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park over the holiday weekend and hiked the Appalachian Trail. The mountains really do look wonderfully smoky. Gatlinburg (the nearby town where we stayed) is a strange, neon place with knife stores and funnel cakes and miniature golf and ten flavors of moonshine. The juxtaposition of the park and town is certainly odd, like a cathedral in an amusement park, a silk dress and a coonskin cap, a crosshatch of the sacred and the sensational.
